Nourish proposes a City Foodshed Network for NPF3

The Scottish Government is currently consulting on the National Planning Framework 3 (NPF3) and the Scottish Planning Policy (SPP). The consultation deadline is 23 July 2013.

SPP and NPF3, both documents should have the same outcomes and targets with the SPP dealing with the ‘how’ and NPF3 the ‘where’. NPF3 outlines the specific policy implications for specific geographies such as Scotland as a whole; the coast and marine areas; rural areas; towns and villages; cities and city regions.

In a pre-consultation Nourish put forward a proposal for national development designation. Nourish proposes to create a City Foodshed Network, a network of periurban ‘foodsheds’ around Scotland’s seven cities, investing through acquisition of or upgrading in hundreds of hectares of urban and periurban land for vegetable and fruit production. These holdings would co-operatively supply public procurement, social enterprises and community buying groups in the cities.

The Scottish Government received 242 formal proposals for national developments to be included in NPF3.
