George Monbiot (Guardian 28 May) wants to see re-wilding in Europe. He’s a bit off the mark about CAP subsidies, which go to the low ground much more than the hills – but his main point is we should stop farming some less productive upland areas and make room for wolves, bears, lynx and beavers. What do you think?
I’m all for ‘re-wilding’ but a strain of this is deep-green misanthropy. Wanting humans to disappear is missing the point
the concept of “wilderness” as opposed to cultural landscapes shows the non-understanding of how we, human beings, relate to “nature” or rather the earth and everything it is composed of.
