Nourish Report to UN CESCR

Nourish Scotland give evidence to UN CESCR

Nourish Scotland participated in the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) review of the UK’s performance of rights over 2015-16.

Our headline concerns were that covenant rights are unenforceable, the lack of monitoring – especially of food insecurity, and regression on the right to food. We focused on the financial accessibility of food, but also looked at nutritional adequacy, cultural appropriateness, freedom from toxic chemicals, access to land, markets, processing and distribution, and the sustainability of the food system in to the future. We provided specific analysis on the impact of regression on women, children, disabled people, and refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.

Our written evidence and recommendations to the Full Session are available as a PDF, or as a Word doc.

We also attended the state examination in Geneva from 15-18 June 2016, thank you to our supporters for enabling us to go.

2016 was the first time that a UN Committee addressed specific recommendations to the UK on the right to food. Read the key recommendations relating to the right to food of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Committee on the Rights of the Child.
